How many times do we have a disagreement with our children?
Or our children have a disagreement with us, as parents?
What caused the argument, the children or us?
It’s not important. We can all be at fault.
What led to the situation, what was already underlying?
Do we all listen appropriately and effectively?
We, as parents, try to guide, advise, protect, be there for all life’s emotional times. When children grow up they make their own decisions. It’s a part of life, of nature, just the way it is.
Underneath it all, love is strong, even when it seems to be misplaced for a while.
Watching a child grow up, nurturing and caring for them, loving them so completely and unconditionally, then suddenly they seem to have a mind of their own. They don’t need us as much.
Maybe not at all for a while. They may come back with their hands out when they need something.
Who else can they turn to?
Sometimes, just sometimes, these disagreements hurt.
It’s a hard time of life.
But, when the time is right, we have to let our grown up children go, make their decision for themselves, their mistakes, their opportunities.
That’s what this song is about, ‘You’re On Your Own Now’.
Alex Zander Walker singing the son part
Alex Zander Walker is a trained singer, who has a wonderful and flexible talent for delivering vocal performances. When I spoke to him about singing the son part of this song, he was so enthusiastic for this chance. We discussed delivering a young and innocent style for his first son verse, followed by a bit more cheeky and with attitude second verse, as a teenager. Finally, for the last verse, a maturer understanding of being ‘on my own’.
For my part I portrayed the father who had always been there, watching the growing, the pains, the picking up where needed. Until a time comes when the adolescent has grown up, but you still continue to do you what you always have done, but it is no longer required. It’s a two way process this letting your child grow and go. It can hurt on both sides, for differing reasons. Sometimes things get said which affect the relationship. But the underlying theme is ‘love’. It is still there.

(Father) Ever since you were small
I always heard you call
I’d catch you when you fall
I adored you
(Son) You were always there for me
I was safe as could be
I was always so happy
I adored you
chorus
(Father) You’re on your own now, You’re on your own now, You’re on your own now
(Son) I’m on my own
(Father) You would call out my name
Whenever you were in pain
It’s always been the same
I protect you
(Son) Whenever I fell down
You’d always be around
You’d turn it all upside down
And protect me
chorus
(Father) You’re on your own now, You’re on your own now
(Son) I’m on my own now, I’m on my own
Instrumental
(Father) And now that you’re a man
I still do all I can
I help you make your plans
But I hurt you
(Son) And now I’ve found my way
I no longer need your say
That was yesterday
And I hurt you
I’m on my own now
(I will always love you)
